Pregnancy, Cheap Vitamins, and Your Liver Hour

So, on Christmas morning, after the kids ransacked their stocking and opened a few gifts, I handed Walter a small package.  In it, was the pregnancy test with a big fat +POSITIVE+ plus sign.  We're going to have another baby!

Three months later and I'm now in the second trimester.  This pregnancy has been different.  I felt nauseous and had very little appetite through the first trimester, but I didn't actually barf at all this time.  (With Roman, I barfed pretty bad.  It was bad.)  I don't have any real cravings like I did with the others. With Chloe, I craved cheese - mac n cheese, broccoli & cheese, salad with cheese.  With Roman, it was peanut butter.  Couldn't get enough.  And with Ben, it was the scent of lavendar. I bought everything lavendar.  This time, no cravings, but I do enjoy more some foods that I didn't particularly like before: eggs and bananas (not together).  Eggs gross me out and I don't like the texture of bananas.  Until now, the texture and sliminess takes a back seat to something else that makes me enjoy them.

And another different thing: insomnia.  It's killing me.  I haven't slept well since early January.  I wake up at 2:30 am and just cannot get back to sleep. And it's different each night; sometimes Walter wakes me up, sometimes it's a kid, sometimes the weather, sometimes I just have to pee.  But then I can't get back to sleep.  Or Walter can't get back to sleep and keeps me up.  But whatever the reason, I'm a zombie.

So, I was talking a friend in church who mentioned that 2am is your "liver hour."  I had never heard of this, but she explained that 2am is the time of day when your liver is most active and if your body is trying to rid itself of toxins, that will be the time your liver is working hardest.  But I haven't changed my eating habits and really don't eat a lot of processed foods.  The only thing I could think of was my prenatal vitamin.  Maybe I'm getting too much vitamins and that is the time of day when my body is processing all of it.

So, I mentioned all that to another friend at church who suggested a different brand that's made of whole food raw ingredients.  (She also reminded me that taking cheap vitamins is a waste of my money!)  So, I switched last week and I actually had three good nights of sleep this week!  Hope this insomnia is a trend that's going away with my waning morning sickness.
