Holiday Spirit: I have a general philosophy against commercialized holidays and getting ready for one holiday more than a month early. Like, it drives me bonkers how the stores start selling Christmas stuff before Halloween is even over. I don't put up the Christmas decor in our house until the day after Thanksgiving. I want to enjoy Thanksgiving before I even start thinking about the next holiday. Especially since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Let's not rush it, people!
But I have to admit, I was a little giddy when they were playing Christmas music on the radio this weekend. I am one of those weirdos that play Christmas tunes whenever I'm feeling merry, not just in December. But when I heard them on the radio, that means that Thanksgiving is almost here and everything just seemed so jolly as I drove along in my car.
I'm taking out all my Thanksgiving fantasies on my Girl Scouts, bless their little hearts for putting up with me. We are putting together a recipe booklet, made woven place mats, and last week, we made a collosal mess making cornbread at the church where we meet. It was the fun-est activity yet. This week, I get to hand out our Thanksgiving fun patches that I found on ebay.
I'm going to have a jam-packed Thanksgiving feast at home and I'm so excited. When we were building our house, they wouldn't tell us how long it would take. But I said that as long as we closed in time for Thanksgiving, I'd be happy. I said that I was going to invite everyone I know to come over. Heck, I even joked about going down Las Vegas Trail and inviting random strangers to come eat with us! I have my Mom, Walter's mom and aunt, the Hambys and his parents and aunt and uncle, our new next door neighbors who just closed on their house this week, plus five kids. And then, I got really crazy and invited five interns at work who are from the Netherlands. That's sixteen adults!
Walter's new toy: Has anyone seen my husband lately? I lost him somewhere last week. It started when he realized that his cell phone took a trip through the washing machine. A friend told us to let it dry out in a container of rice for a couple days. But alas, the phone was beyond repair. He went to the AT&T store and came home with a new iPhone. He was giddy at first and then got hooked on downloading apps. And I don't think I've had his attention since then. (And yes, I tried that.) When will the novelty end?
Rollerskating: Chloe tried rollerskating this week. It was a birthday party for one of her friends in ballet. She did great! I put on some skates too and helped her go a couple laps around the rink. Then, when all the other kids started showing up, I think she got self conscious and started getting whiney because she couldn't skate well by herself. But after cake, she loosened up and started having fun again. I think we're going to have to make that a regular activity for when we get some girl time together.
Bowling: Our old neighbor, Rick, signed us up for a bowling league. He needed at least one girl on the team. I told him I'd play, but don't expect me to be any good. We are VERY untalented in the bowling skillz. But somehow, we've made our way to 4th place in the league. Those other teams must REALLY stink! I found a pair of bowling shoes on ebay for $14! That's a third of the price of the shoes in the pro shop. But shipping and handling was another $13. It was still cheaper than the pro shop, but don't y'all think there is just something intrinsically wrong with paying as much S&H as the actual product costs?
